Families across the Blue Mountains have less than two weeks to register for Culture Dose for Kids, the free, evidence-based arts and wellbeing program returning to the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in Katoomba on 25 July. Registrations close on 22 June 2026, with only 10 days remaining to apply.
The program, developed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in partnership with the Black Dog Institute, supports children aged 9 to 12 who experience mild anxiety, alongside a parent or caregiver. Over eight Saturday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm, from 25 July to 19 September, art-making in a calm, supportive space aims to reduce anxiety, build emotional expression and strengthen family bonds.
All materials and afternoon tea are provided at no cost. While the children create and explore, parents and carers attend their own concurrent sessions, creating a genuine family wellbeing ritual rather than a drop-off activity.
Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said the partnership brought vital resources to the region. “Working with key cultural institutions like the Art Gallery of New South Wales allows us to bring high-quality, inclusive arts programs directly to our region,” he said.
The program’s past participants speak to its impact. “We absolutely loved the Culture Dose for Kids program,” one parent said. “It gave us precious time to pause together as a family, be curious about art and create meaningful things side by side. The facilitators created such a warm, safe and respectful space where creativity and meaningful possibilities felt endless.”
Another parent described the experience as “like a warm hug” and said the family left feeling “inspired, connected and uplifted.”
Culture Dose for Kids was developed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales using research from the Black Dog Institute, and an evaluation from 2021 to 2024 gave it participant satisfaction ratings of 9 to 10 out of 10. The program has also been offered at the Art Gallery of NSW and other regional galleries, but the Katoomba sessions mean local families don’t need to travel to Sydney to access the same evidence-backed model.
Participation is by application only, and the program is specifically designed for children with mild anxiety, not as a general art class. Interested families can apply via the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre website until 22 June 2026. Spots are limited, and the closing date is now only 10 days away.
The eight-week structure offers something one-off workshops rarely provide: ongoing connection, confidence and creative growth. For families who may have felt the arts were out of reach, Culture Dose for Kids opens a door that stays open long after the final Saturday.
