Getting around Sydney is straightforward when you have the right tools on your phone. The Transport NSW ecosystem has improved significantly, and a handful of third-party apps have become genuinely useful complements. Here is what to install before you arrive.
Transport NSW Trip Planner
The most important tool for planning any journey in Sydney. Available at transportnsw.info/trip and built into the Opal Travel app.
Enter your origin and destination such as station name, suburb, street address, or landmark and set your departure or arrival time, and the Trip Planner returns step-by-step directions, real-time departure information, fare estimates, crowding levels, and accessibility options. A 2026 refresh improved disruption alerts and added clearer Opal-only stop notifications. For most journeys in Sydney, this is where you start.
Opal Travel (Official Transport NSW App)
The official app for managing Opal card travel across Sydney. In 2026 it combines the trip planner, live departures, and Opal card management in a single app.
Key features:
- Real-time departures and platform information for trains, buses, ferries and light rail
- Trip planner with live delay data
- Opal balance check – tap an NFC-enabled Android phone against your card to read the balance without logging in
- Push notifications for service disruptions on saved trips
- Hop-off reminder – alerts you as your stop approaches, useful on unfamiliar routes
- Lock Screen widget showing real-time departure countdowns for saved stops (2026 update)
- Fare estimates for planned journeys
Google Maps
Google Maps integrates Transport NSW real-time data and works well for most Sydney journeys. For visitors already familiar with Google Maps in other cities, it is a practical option. Departure boards update in real time and the transit layer shows live disruptions. For complex multi-modal journeys or detailed disruption alerts, the official apps are more reliable.
TripView
A long-running favourite with Sydney commuters for its clean departure board interface. TripView shows scheduled and real-time departure information for saved stops and routes, loading quickly and clearly. Particularly popular with regular train and ferry users who want departure times without navigating a full journey planner. A free version covers basic functionality; a paid version removes ads and adds home screen widgets.
Moovit
A multi-city transit app that integrates Sydney’s Opal network alongside 3,500 other cities. Endorsed by Transport NSW. Moovit’s strength is familiarity for international visitors, with many having used it in London, Tokyo or New York, so the Sydney interface will be immediately recognisable. Features include real-time departures, step-by-step navigation, and saved journeys. A practical choice for short-stay visitors who prefer not to learn a new app.
Citymapper
Citymapper covers Sydney alongside dozens of other cities and is a strong option for visitors arriving from cities where it is already familiar. It integrates walking, cycling, rideshare (Uber, Ola), and public transport in a single interface, useful for journeys that mix modes. Route comparison across all options, including cost, is clearly presented.
What to Install
- If you are using an Opal card: Opal Travel app is essential for balance management and NFC tap-to-read balance checking.
- For daily commuting: TripView for clean departure boards; Opal Travel for full trip planning.
- For visitors from overseas: Moovit or Citymapper if you already use either app elsewhere, or Opal Travel if you prefer the official tool.
- As a universal backup: Google Maps covers most eventualities and requires no extra downloads.
