Residents can drop into free, self-led maker workshops, board games and preschool storytime at three Canada Bay library locations on Thursday 30 July 2026, with Five Dock and Concord libraries staying open until 9pm.

The City of Canada Bay Libraries are taking part in the statewide ‘Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds’ initiative, turning their branches into community hubs for a day of free, no-booking activities. The Learning Space at The Connection in Rhodes will also participate, closing at its usual 9pm.

“Our libraries are welcoming, accessible places where people can learn, create and connect,” said Mayor Michael Megna. “Whether you’re borrowing a book, learning a new skill, using creative technology or looking for a quiet place to study, there’s something for everyone.”

Visitors can explore free access to books, eBooks, audiobooks, movies, music, magazines and newspapers, as well as study areas and creative technology programs. New residents can sign up for membership on the day or online for immediate borrowing rights and year-round program access.

The self-led Open Maker Workshop will give locals a chance to use creative equipment without any prior experience, while the Board Games Group offers drop-in social play. Preschool Storytime runs at dedicated times, and most other activities require no booking.

Five Dock Library and Concord Library will extend their hours to 9pm, a late finish that allows working families to attend after hours. The Learning Space at Rhodes, already open until 9pm, will host the day’s events during its standard schedule.

“Open Day on 30 July is a great opportunity to meet the staff, attend an activity, and see what’s on offer at no cost to the community,” Mayor Megna added. “If you can’t make it on the day, library programs and services run throughout the year.”
