Flying Lotus will perform at Sydney Opera House for the first time in over a decade when Sydney tastemakers Astral People stage their 15th anniversary venue-wide takeover on 27 May.
The one-night-only event spans four Opera House venues during Vivid LIVE. Flying Lotus brings his immersive Layer³ 3D show to the Joan Sutherland Theatre alongside TOKiMONSTA and ONEMAN performing live electronic music with lighting by SOFT CENTRE’s Sam Whiteside.
General public tickets go on sale at 9am on 16 March, with pre-sales for Opera House Insiders and newsletter subscribers starting earlier. The takeover is not repeated on other nights.
Astral People co-founder Vic reflected on the collective’s journey from their first sold-out party in 2011. “It was simple, but it was a really effective concept,” he said. “It was a feeling I’d never experienced before. Selling out something as your first ever party, that was crazy.”
The Concert Hall will host a world-first tribute to Gil Scott-Heron led by longtime collaborator Brian Jackson and Yasiin Bey. TOKiMONSTA, the first Asian American producer nominated for a Grammy Award for her 2017 album ‘Lune Rouge’, is renowned for collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Anderson .Paak.
Astral People formed in 2011 and became one of Australia’s most innovative touring and events collectives. The group has brought artists like Fred again.., Grace Jones, Stormzy, and Jamie xx to Australian shores while managing local acts including Cosmo’s Midnight, FUKHED, and Sam Alfred.
The takeover “threads together global club culture” while “local collectives reshape the room nightly into something closer to a warehouse than a theatre”. Each venue offers different musical experiences across the Concert Hall, Joan Sutherland Theatre, Utzon Room, and Studio.
Astral People did not make additional artists available for comment beyond the official announcement.
