Free July Holiday Activities Open for Booking in North Sydney

Parents in North Sydney can avoid the $120-a-day private camps and cross-city drives this July, with council-run activities offering free bushwalks, drama workshops and sports clinics a short walk from the harbour shoreline.

North Sydney Council has released its winter holiday program, with bookings open for sessions running through the New South Wales school break from 4 to 19 July. The schedule spans four venues within a few kilometres of the CBD: the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability in Waverton, Stanton Library, the Ensemble Theatre and Cammeray Park. Most events are free. A handful of creative workshops carry modest fees.

The Coal Loader, a former industrial site turned sustainability hub, anchors the nature offerings. Children can join a Winter Bush Walk, an after-dark Spotlight Walk, Bird and Bug Bingo, and Eco Holidays sessions called Power Players and Wave Makers. A Nature Craft workshop rounds out the hands-on environmental program. All of these are free, and council staff say they fill within days of the announcement.

At the Ensemble Theatre in North Sydney, three age-specific drama workshops run over multiple days. Witches, Warlocks & Wizards! for 8-to-10-year-olds runs 6–10 July. The following week, Friend or Foe? for 10-to-12-year-olds and Hollywood Heroes! for 12-to-15-year-olds both run 13–17 July. These workshops are fee-based and require advance registration.

Stanton Library will host FARTastic Storytime (yes, that is the real name), author and illustrator visits by Melissa-Jane Fogarty and Mick Elliott, a Gross Comic Drawing session, a YA readers event with Amy Doak and beginner Dungeons & Dragons sessions. The library events are almost entirely free, but spots for author workshops disappear quickly.

For families after outdoor exertion, Sydney FC Holiday Clinics return to Cammeray Park, while a Kids Bike Riding Skills Session teaches riders aged 5 to 10 the basics of balance and road awareness. Both programs have limited numbers and require booking.

The proximity of the venues matters. Instead of trekking to Moore Park or Darling Harbour for holiday entertainment, local families can walk, ride or take a short bus trip. The council has deliberately priced the program to compete with private camps that typically cost between $60 and $120 per child per day.

Parents should check the fee structure before booking. While bushwalks, library storytimes and the bike session carry no cost, the drama workshops and some library author sessions have a fee.
