Mat Jodrell returned to Australia earlier this year after eight years performing and teaching at New York’s Juilliard School. On Sunday 2 August, the trumpeter will join the James Morrison Quartet on stage at the Art Gallery of NSW for the first time.
The three-hour concert in Kaldor Hall is part of the Gallery’s intimate live music series and folds in an exclusive after-hours viewing of the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2026. It is a rare pairing of world-class jazz and one of the country’s most important annual art surveys.
Doors open at 6pm. Morrison will lead his favourite ensemble, moving between trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn, saxophone and piano. Light refreshments are available until 7.30pm from the Members Lounge and a pop-up bar.
Tickets cost $95 for Members and $120 for non-members. Past James Morrison concerts at the Gallery have sold out, so booking early is the only safe move if you want an evening that has been called fun and unforgettable by regulars.
Gallery visitors should note the lift to Lower Level 3 is out of service from June to October 2026 while upgrades are completed. Patrons can use the escalator or contact the Visitor Experience team for accessibility assistance.
Morrison has a long history at the Gallery, but this is the first time Jodrell’s New York-honed sound will cut through the hall. The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman exhibition runs until 16 August, making the 2 August date a rare chance to see the finalists and winners in a quiet, after-dark gallery before the crowds return.
