Pottery and Choir lead North Sydney Community Centre’s winter term

A new pottery tutor and a Monday night choir that asks only for enthusiasm, not auditions, arrive at North Sydney Community Centre when winter Term 3 begins on Saturday 18 July.

The not-for-profit centre at 220 Miller Street, a fixture of the lower north shore since 1972, has released a program of around 100 classes and workshops. The term offers everything from playgroup for under-fives to line dancing, with several new instructors joining the roster.

“The North Sydney Community Centre wakes up for winter this week,” said Mosman Collective’s Anna Usher, who reported on the term launch. “Term three starts this coming Saturday, kids’ programs are back, and there is a spot in almost everything if you book now.”

Among the fresh faces is Sherelyn Cullen, who leads Pottery for Beginners ($315 for the term) from 2pm to 5pm on Saturdays, covering wheel work, slip casting and hand building. For those who prefer singing over shaping clay, Bec Waters starts Monday Night Choir on 20 July at 7:30pm ($190 a term). No experience is needed, just a willingness to turn up and sing.

Cooking workshops are designed for participants to take home ready meals. Curry and Carry runs on 19 July for $105, and Bake the Perfect Scones follows on 26 July at $180. Interior Design Fundamentals with Kerry Selby Brown kicks off on 24 July, a nine-week course for $485, while Friday Mahjong starts the same day at $235. Languages including Italian, French, Spanish, Japanese, Greek and German continue, as do yoga, Zumba, tai chi and line dancing. After School Care operates weekdays from 3pm to 6pm for children aged five to 12.

The Northside Produce Market fills the centre’s Miller Street forecourt every Saturday from 8am to midday. On 18 July the market marks Bastille Day with 70-plus stalls and specials that include Tahaa and Chef Clément’s Burnt Basque Cheesecake. Explorers Playgroup resumes on Tuesday 21 July with storytime, sing-alongs and a Christmas in July theme. Sessions run Tuesday to Thursday, 9:30am to midday, at $15 per family.

Enrolments and the free What’s On Guide PDF are available at northsydneycentre.com.au. The centre can also be reached on (02) 9922 2299, Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm. Many classes welcome beginners without auditions or prior skills, and market-goers are advised to arrive early for the best produce. Free teen winter holiday workshops have limited spots, and term classes are filling quickly from the 18 July start dates.

Public transport is recommended because parking is tight around Miller Street and Ted Mack Civic Park. North Sydney Train Station is a short walk away, and buses run frequently along Miller Street. The nearby North Sydney Olympic Pool and local cafes offer easy ways to extend the morning or afternoon.
