The Sydney Writers’ Festival will stream live sessions to regional libraries across Australia from May 21-23, connecting audiences in Maitland, Port Lincoln, and the Whitsundays with world-class authors without leaving their local communities.
Celebrity chef and author Stephanie Alexander headlines the opening day program, with her session streaming free to Maitland Library at 2pm on May 21. The festival’s ‘Show Me the Truth’ theme extends beyond Sydney through partnerships with regional library networks nationwide.
Festival director confirmed the streaming initiative addresses barriers that prevent regional audiences from accessing premium literary events. “We want every Australian to experience these conversations, regardless of their postcode,” the director said in a statement.
Sydney venues including the State Library of NSW, Carriageworks, and suburban libraries in Epping, Ryde, Hornsby, and Kirrawee will host more than 55 free events alongside the regional streams. Ticketed after-hours regional sessions cost $5, while most daytime streams remain free.
Maitland Town Hall will complement its library streams with in-person events on May 23, featuring local authors alongside the Sydney programming. Similar hybrid models operate in Port Lincoln and Mornington Peninsula libraries.
The State Library of NSW anchors Sydney’s free programming, with Carriageworks hosting evening sessions that stream simultaneously to regional partners. Suburban Sydney libraries report increased attendance for literary events since the program launched.
Regional library coordinators describe the streams as transforming local cultural offerings. Maitland Library’s community programs manager noted demand for literary events had grown significantly among residents who previously travelled to Sydney for major festivals.
