The T3 runs from Liverpool in Sydney’s south-west through Regents Park, Berala, and Birrong before joining the Inner West corridor at Strathfield and looping through the City Circle. It’s a line that rewards the curious and while less prominent than the T1 or T4, but essential for reaching the western suburbs without changing trains at Parramatta or Central.

The South-West’s City Circle Link
The T3’s story has recently changed significantly. Until October 2024, the T3 ran two routes: a Liverpool service via Regents Park, and a Bankstown service via Sydenham. The Bankstown branch has now been converted to Sydney Metro City & Southwest, the driverless metro line extending from Sydenham south through Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, and into the Bankstown CBD. As a result, the T3 today is entirely the Liverpool via Regents Park service.
The remaining T3 route runs through a part of western Sydney that doesn’t always make it onto tourist maps but serves a dense, multicultural corridor of communities. Birrong, Berala, and Regents Park are working-class suburbs with excellent Vietnamese, Lebanese, and South Asian food strips. Strathfield, where the T3 joins the T1 and T2 corridor, is the transit hub of the inner-west.
T3 Bankstown Branch – Now Metro
If you’re looking for trains to Bankstown, Lakemba, Belmore, or stations along the old T3 Bankstown route, those services now run as Sydney Metro City & Southwest from Sydenham. Change from T2 at Sydenham and board the Metro. Opal fares apply as normal and no extra charge, just a platform change.
Key Stations
Stations Worth Knowing on the T3
Liverpool
Western terminus · Shared with T2
Liverpool is the joint western terminus for both T2 and T3, making it a significant Western Sydney hub. The city has a rich history as one of Macquarie’s five original towns and today hosts the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre (one of Sydney’s more ambitious regional galleries, 5 km south in a converted power station). Liverpool’s town centre along Macquarie Street has been undergoing renewal, with new dining options alongside its multicultural food scene. The Liverpool Hospital, one of western Sydney’s major teaching hospitals, is a 5-minute bus ride from the station.
Regents Park
South-West corridor
A quiet residential station on the Regents Park corridor, serving the local community. The suburb borders Berala and Birrong and is part of the broader Bankstown LGA. Of limited tourist interest but reliable as a transit point if you’re visiting friends or family in the Auburn–Bankstown area.
Berala
South-West corridor
A small suburban station serving Berala and the edges of Auburn. Auburn itself is better accessed via T1 Western (Auburn station), which offers the suburb’s full main street with its extraordinary Turkish and Middle Eastern food scene. However, Berala is a useful alternative entry point for the southern part of the Auburn LGA.
Birrong
South-West corridor · Dining strip nearby
Birrong is a small suburb with a compact shopping strip on Hume Highway. The Vietnamese and South Asian food options around Birrong and Yagoona are less well-known than Cabramatta’s famous restaurant mile but genuinely excellent. A local secret: the pho shops and banh mi bakeries on Hume Highway near Yagoona (one stop past Birrong via bus) are among the best-value eating in western Sydney.
Strathfield
Junction · T1 & T2 interchange
The T3 joins the shared Inner West corridor at Strathfield, where it shares tracks with the T2 through to the City Circle. Strathfield is the major interchange for passengers connecting between the south-west corridor and the T1 Western or T9 Northern lines. The Korean dining precinct on The Boulevarde east of the station is a genuine destination, Korean barbecue and fried chicken restaurants stay open late and are particularly lively on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Town Hall (via City Circle)
City Circle · CBD core
T3 trains enter the City Circle and loop through the underground CBD stations. Town Hall is the central CBD stop, directly beneath the Sydney Town Hall and the QVB. If you board the T3 at Liverpool heading cityward, you’ll arrive at Town Hall without changing trains, a direct link from the south-west to the CBD’s commercial heart.
How to Use It
Getting Around on the T3
For Bankstown and former T3 stations, change to Metro at Sydenham
The old T3 Bankstown route is now Sydney Metro. Board a T2 from Central or any City Circle station, ride to Sydenham, then transfer to the Metro platform for Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, and Bankstown. It’s a flat transfer, no extra cost, same Opal fare.
T3 is your direct link from Liverpool to the City Circle
If you’re in Liverpool and need to reach the CBD, both T2 and T3 run from Liverpool to the City Circle. They take slightly different intermediate routes but end up at the same CBD stations. Use whichever departs first, the Transport NSW app shows live departures.
Check which direction the City Circle train is looping
Once the T3 enters the City Circle, it loops through underground stations. Whether it goes “via Town Hall first” or “via Wynyard first” depends on the direction of travel in the loop. Check the destination board or app if you need a specific CBD station, Central, Museum, St James, Circular Quay, Wynyard, and Town Hall are all on the loop.
Insider Tips
The T3’s Hidden Strengths
The Regents Park corridor passes through some of the most affordable and authentically multicultural suburbs in the city. If you want to eat extraordinarily well on a budget, Vietnamese, Lebanese, and South Asian cuisines at local-prices, the western Sydney stops along the T3 (and connecting buses to Yagoona and Bankstown) deliver what the CBD only approximates at twice the price.
Auburn via T1 – Not T3
Auburn is often confused with the T3 corridor. Auburn station is on the T1 Western line. The T3 passes through the southern end of the Auburn LGA via Berala but doesn’t serve Auburn station directly. For Auburn’s Turkish markets and kebab shops, catch a T1 Western from Central to Auburn station.
