The first exhibition to explicitly celebrate Palm Beach Headland’s dark-sky status opens at Manly Art Gallery & Museum on 12 June 2026. The collection-based show, “CEAD Collection Stories: Night Sky”, marks the headland’s 2024 designation as Australia’s first Urban Night Sky Place by DarkSky International.
Two other free exhibitions open alongside it: Tamara Dean’s “Leave Only Footprints”, examining human connection to nature, and Min Wong’s “You shall defiantly pass”, drawing on international ritual and fractured-world themes. All three run until 2 August.
Mayor Sue Heins said the winter program reinforces MAG&M’s role as a leading cultural destination on the Northern Beaches. “These exhibitions offer unique perspectives and invite meaningful reflection,” she said. “The inclusion of works from our own collection in Night Sky also provides a wonderful opportunity to experience the depth and richness of MAG&M’s holdings.”
The Night Sky show draws exclusively on the gallery’s permanent holdings of ceramics, photography and paintings, directly responding to the 2024 DarkSky recognition of the nearby headland. That designation, a first for any urban site in Australia, protects the area’s low light pollution levels and positions Palm Beach as a site of international astronomical significance.
Tamara Dean’s series includes large-scale photographic works such as “I’ve always wondered when soon is” (2022) and “Sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) in summer”, produced as part of MAG&M’s ongoing Collective for Environmental Art & Design (CEAD) program. Min Wong’s installation practice brings an international perspective shaped by her time working between Australia and Asia.
A free public launch event runs from 6pm on 12 June, offering the first chance to view the new exhibitions. Normal gallery hours are also free of charge, meaning visitors can return anytime through to early August without a ticket.
The eight-week window is tight. After 2 August the three shows close and the Night Sky works return to the collection stores, with no guarantee of a similar thematic rotation soon. MAG&M’s intimate setting, a short walk from Manly Wharf, offers a more direct encounter with the works than larger CBD institutions and brings the local astronomy heritage into sharp focus in a way previous collection rotations did not.
If you are looking for a zero-cost cultural outing this winter, the opening night on 12 June is the launch pad, but any visit before August offers the same free access. The Night Sky exhibition, in particular, leaves a trail from a suburban headland to the global dark-sky movement.
