Sydney Metro

Sydney Metro, Australia’s largest public transport project, is set to revolutionize travel across the city by creating a fast, reliable, and fully automated rail system. The network will feature four metro lines, spanning 113 kilometers, and will include 46 stations. The Sydney Metro will connect the city’s northwest, west, southwest, and greater west regions with fully accessible, turn-up-and-go services. With driverless trains and cutting-edge technology, the system promises to significantly enhance public transport in Sydney.

Operational Lines (as of August 2024)

  • The Sydney Metro Northwest line opened in 2019 connecting Chatswood to Rouse Hill (Tallawong Station).
  • The Sydney Metro City & Southwest line connecting Chatswood to Sydenham opened on the 19th of August 2024. Eventually this line will connect to Bankstown.

When fully completed this Tallawong Station in the northwest to Bankstown Station in the Southwest will be known as the M1 line.

Future Lines

  • The Sydney Metro West project, will link Greater Parramatta to the Sydney CBD, doubling rail capacity between these major hubs.
  • The Western Sydney Airport metro railway will link Greater Western Sydney, also connecting local communities and travelers to the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

Using the Sydney Metro

As of August 19th 2024, the Sydney Metro Northwest line and Sydney Metro City & Southwest line from Tallawong Station to Sydneham Station is operational. A timetable can be found on the Transport NSW site here.

You can also use the Transport NSW journey planner here to navigate the combined Metro, Train, Bus, Ferry, Light Rail, and coach services.

You can use the Opal Card or an an Opal single trip ticket for journey’s on the new Metro as you would for the entire public transport network. You can also tap on and tap off with a contactless-enabled credit, debit card or linked device. More here.

Fare rates: travel on the network is distance based with discounted rates for off-peak travel. Rates start at $4.20 in peak and $2.94 in off-peak.
